Facts About Boating Accidents

Recreational boating fatalities are very high, even exceeding fatalities in general aviation accidents. In 2004, the States reported to the U.S. Coast Guard that 676 persons were killed and 3,363 persons were seriously injured in boating accidents in this country. Of the 676 fatalities, 484 drowned.

Other information indicates that recreational boating injuries are even higher than the numbers reported to the United States Coast Guard. Information from an American Red Cross survey indicates that more than 355,000 persons are injured from recreational boating accidents annually, and more than 40 percent of these injuries require medical treatment beyond first aid. A study by the Centers for Disease Control, released in 1997, found that as many as 32,000 injuries from personal watercraft alone required medical treatment

A boating accident report must be filed when...

  • A life is lost due to the accident.
  • Someone is injured and requires medical attention beyond first aid.
  • There is damage by or to the vessel and other property.
  • Any person on board a vessel disappears (under circumstances indicating possible death or injury).

    Boating Accidents Include:

  • Capsizing
  • Falls Overboard
  • Collisions
  • Sinking/Flooding
  • Explosions
  • Disappearance
  • Fire

    * Damage is determined by federal regulation to be reportable when it exceeds $500 or there is complete loss of the vessel (Note: many states have set a limit less than $500 - contact the local boating authority to determine the amount).

You can die from hypothermia in as little as 3 hours

If a person is exposed to water temperatures of less than 92 degrees Fahrenheit, hypothermia can already occur. The body core temperature drops and the blood circulation continuously decreases. At first, arms and legs will start to feel cold, while the body conserves the heat for the inner organs and the brain. The decreased blood flow causes the person to lose muscular control of the arms and legs, making swimming impossible. At that point, drowning will most likely occur. Even a person with a PFD (personal flotation device) may have difficulties keeping from floating face down, especially in rough waters. As the brain cools down, confusion sets in and the chances of making rational decisions, such as grabbing a rescue rope, are very slim.
